Leading Like Jesus — Sabbath at the NAD Year-end Meetings

During the 2015 GC Session, Alvin Kibble, vice president of public affairs and religious liberty, learned that a symbol of hate — the confederate flag — would be removed from the South Carolina Capitol, following the massacre of nine African American worshippers by a white supremacist at a Charleston church. Kibble stood at a delegate mic in the Alamodome and waited for a chance to speak. God had impressed on his heart to call for a moment of silence for the men and women killed less than a month prior. When he was finally granted permission to speak, he asked the chairman if the body could observe a moment for the victims. The response? Kibble was told he was out of order and the request was denied.

After relating this experience at the North American Division Year-end Meetings on Sabbath, November 3, 2018, Kibble then said:

“A Sabbath ago there were 11 Sabbath worshippers, who were taken down in the midst of worship, there at the Tree of Life in Pittsburgh. And my heart grieves, because that could have been us. When we get to be too important to take up the cause of others, we lose our authority to be able to preach hope and wholeness to anybody….We lose our credibility if we don’t have the courage to say ‘this is wrong. This isn’t right.’ And so this morning as we prepare for our worship, our prayer of intercession, I would hope that we would have a moment of silence — and nobody’s going to call me out of order — for those 11 who were cut down. They were the stalwart members of that religious community...and they are without life today because somebody thought they would prefer to have their space than their presence.”

Sabbath at the NAD was full of song, prayer, and testimonials — a full four hours of worship and praise as North American leadership rested together from the business they are gathered together to conduct.

G. Alexander Bryant, executive secretary of the NAD, rose shortly after Noon to deliver the message. At the beginning of his sermon, after a heartfelt introduction by President Jackson, Bryant told the audience that Jackson has been trying to get him to preach the Sabbath sermon at NAD Year-end Meetings for three years now. Because of what happened in both 2016 and 2017, Bryant said no — he felt the people needed to hear from their President. But this year, he couldn’t say no to Jackson’s request again.

“We are in some challenging times in the church and in the world,” Bryant told the audience. I thought long and hard about what to share today, and “all I have is Jesus. I don’t have a heavy theological message. The only place I know to go in times like this is to Jesus.”

He continued saying, “We know what God requires of us to lead a Christian life. But what does God require of us to be a Christian leader?” Bryant discussed how he’d always been “first chair” his whole life, even in school, and so when he received the call to come and serve as executive secretary at the NAD, he became fascinated with the concept of leading from the second chair. What does that role look like, he asked himself. What does leadership look like when you’re not the leader? He discovered a book that addressed this very topic, and it opened his eyes.

Bryant then discussed the great challenge Jesus faced with his disciples: how to change their worldly, “Gentilish” view of leadership to one that was Christ-centered with a Christ approach. When it came to following Jesus, the disciples left everything without question. But when it came to following him in leadership, Jesus had to show them time and time again the right way. While Jesus tried to prepare them for what was to come, they were focused on what positions they would hold, arguing amongst themselves. “Mundane stuff in the midst of a looming crisis. I wonder how often we get caught up in mundane stuff and a crisis is coming over the horizon,” asked Bryant.

The disciples were obsessed with ascending, but Christ descended. He became the servant of all. Jesus was trying to get the disciples to understand, “I descended to serve,” but they just couldn’t get it. They were so deeply embedded in the culture of their day they couldn’t see the message of why Jesus was there. “You can be a follower of Jesus and not have the mind of Jesus. You can be a leader of Jesus and not have the mind of Jesus,” said Bryant.

What does Gentilish leadership — what the disciples were used to — look like? Bryant asked the audience, and then answered: Demeaning one another, bullying each other, feasting on each other with half truths. God says “that does not belong in the church of God. When you exercise those means, you are leading like the Gentiles...When you cut people down on social media and won’t say a word to their face, you’re leading like the Gentiles….Coercion, manipulation, and arm-twisting does not belong in the Church of Jesus Christ. When you do that, you’re leading like the Gentiles.”

He continued, saying: “We must be careful of holding up protocols and processes as sacrosanct. We say ‘majority rule.’ Do they? Because the majority voted, it’s right? Is it? When have Seventh-day Adventists believed that the majority is right on anything?...We hold up the democratic process as if it is sacred. It’s only a tool. When the majority can run over the minority without consideration for the needs of the minority, for the desires of the minority? Jesus says do not lead like the Gentiles.”

The leadership style Jesus is calling us to is one of servant-leadership, said Bryant. “Do I love Jesus enough to give up, to let go, of what I hold dear? The first part of having the mind of Jesus...is to divest of myself as he did. He emptied himself of everything he’d been accustomed to….It’s hard for me to look at Jesus like that and sit up on my high horse. It’s hard to hold on to that when I look at what Jesus gave up.”

Bryant said as a young pastor, he always feared for his reputation, because that’s all he had. But Jesus gave up his reputation, and he calls us to do the same: “The leader Jesus wants goes counter-culture, it goes against my very nature. Jesus wouldn’t worry about his career path. Some people feel if they don’t rock the boat their chances of advancing in the church hierarchy are greater, chance of keeping my position is greater. When I fail to take a stand or speak for fear of losing my position, then I’ve just disqualified myself from my position. Jesus called for leaders who will be like him.”

“If you’re leading in a way that’s not costing you something, then you’re not leading in the way of Jesus. Servant leadership, Christ-centered leadership costs something. It may cost you some friends, it may cost you some of your reputation, it may cost your position, but it WILL cost. But Jesus says whatever it costs you, I’ll repay it a hundred fold.”

Jesus only used his power to benefit others, never himself, said Bryant. “I am most like Jesus when I stand up for the disenfranchised, and it will cost me something….Jesus was all about the underprivileged, the marginalized, the underserved. In fact, it sounds like social justice to me… Jesus stood up for those who could not stand up for themselves. God looks for us to use the power of our position, whatever he has given us, to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.”

Bryant reminded the audience of the story of Jesus’ washing the disciples feet. When Judas saw that, it was the last straw, said Bryant. Judas said, “If he can wash my feet, he can’t be my leader.” That was the power of culture — the disciples had been taught that a leader is above everyone else, but Jesus said no — a leader descends to serve everybody else. But the cultural mindset was strong. Even after three-and-a-half years of learning at Jesus’ feet, the disciples still didn’t get it.

We know there are tares among the wheat in the church, said Bryant, but that’s God’s responsibility to sort out, not ours. Jesus said leave that to him. It wasn’t for the disciples to do, and it’s not for us to do. “We don’t know who is who and we don’t have to know.” Our job is simply lead everybody as Jesus led.

Yes, we cannot Legislate, and we cannot Coerce TRANSFORMATION
in members of a Local congregation.
TRANSFORMATION is the work of the Holy Spirit as individual persons
develop a relationship and understanding of Christ, of God and develop
a desire and ability to IMITATE Jesus-Christ, to IMITATE God.

The ENFORCEMENT of Voted Rules and Regulations does not bring
Transformation. The INVITING of persons to Imitate Jesus-Christ and God does.

this really is the bottom line on why the GC can no longer be viewed as the voice of god on earth…if it ever was viewed in this way, that is now in the past…what we now have is a fixation on votes, which means a lot of shrewd and calculated politicking percolating behind the scenes…and in the case of san antonio, a number of no-vote delegates were from documented wife-beating cultures…how can their votes against women in ordained leadership be respected, much less be thought of as the voice of god…

in the apostolic church, leaders took their responsibility to lead seriously…instead of hiding behind delegate votes, they considered the evidence and the good of all in the church before ruling on circumcision in a way that made both sides feel like they won something…i can just imagine what would have happened had they opened the question to a floor vote…no doubt circumcision would have won out, and paul’s heroic efforts with the gentiles would have been seriously hindered…
