Monday Meditation: Dr. Chow on Adventism in China

Recently, Notre Dame Press released Schism: Seventh-day Adventism in Post-Denominational China by Christie Chui-Shan Chow. In this video from the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Chow, a Seventh-day Adventist independent scholar, discusses her ethnographic and historical research at this book launch, where she is joined by several other scholars.

Wow! Wouldn’t I love to read her “Oxford Handbook of Seventh-day Adventism”!

Maybe the church in China could be a model for integrating Christianity with local cultures elsewhere, much better than beaming over our western versions into other countries (which has been the past model). It may not look or act the way we do North American Adventism, but our way isn’t the be-all and end-all of religiosity. We could use some fresh ideas here as well.
