Spectrum's Top Stories of 2021

It is jarring to look back at all that has been included in the vast sweep of 2021. As I sit here on New Year's Eve, reading through the entire list of stories that have been published on SpectrumMagazine.org throughout the year, the events from months ago feel so far removed from today. Perhaps the COVID-19 pandemic has bent time for you as well, distorting the contours of the year as time has ebbed and flowed in strange ways for all of us.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at http://spectrummagazine.org/node/11577

For me 2021 was certainly an eventful year and whenever I had the opportunity to do so, I posted. Thank you Spectrum for an amazing array of topics over 2021.
Thank you also for warm greetings at the beginning of this year. I wish the entire team at Spectrum and all readers and contributors a blessed 2022.
Ill close with a devotional that is very dear to me:It is taken from Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost For His Highest and the entry is for December 31
The God of Israel will be your rereward- Isaiah 52: 12.

Security from Yesterday. “…God requires that which is past” . At the end of the year we turn with eagerness to all that God has for the future, and yet anxiety is apt to arise from remembering the yesterdays. Our present enjoyment of God’s grace is apt to be checked by the memory of yesterday’s sins and blunders. But God is the God of our yesterdays, and He allows the memory of them in order to to turn the past into a ministry of spiritual culture for the future. God reminds us of the past lest we get into a shallow security in the present.

Security for Tomorrow. “For the Lord will go before you….” This is a gracious revelation— that God will garrison where we have failed to . He will keep watch lest things trip us up again into like failure, as they assuredly would do,if He were not our rereward. God’s hand reaches back to the past and makes a clearing house for conscience.

Security for Today. “ For ye shall not go out with haste….” As we go forth into the coming year, let it not be in the haste of impetuous, unremembering delight, nor with the flight of impulsive thoughtlessness, but with the patient power of knowing that the God of Israel will go before us. Our yesterdays present irreparable things to us. It is true that we have lost opportunities that will never return, but God can transform this destructive anxiety into a constructive thoughtfulness for the future. Let the past sleep, but let it sleep on the bosom of Christ.

Leave the irreparable past in His hands, and step out into the irresistible future with Him.

Although it may not fit into the category of news stories, for me the most interesting Spectrum “news” of 2021 were the essays of Dr. Gutierrez in which he examines Ellen White’s work critically yet appreciatively without drawing the usual defensive blog responses. His and Matthew Quartey’s essays are on my Spectrum’s Top Ten List for 2021.

Yes, regrettably there were many great things not included in this list simply due to time and space constraints! Glad to hear that you enjoyed reading the thoughtful work from Hanz Gutierrez and Matthew Quartey, who both always have great things to say.

What has astounded me about the top stories on Spectrum is how totally political the discussions have become as it covers this “super cold” called Covid 19. People have been deamonized, called stupid, uneducated etc. for simply having questions about what’s going on.

Personally, I have been vaccinated twice, and had a modicum of trust that medical doctors knew what they were talking about; but, what I didn’t count on was “garbage in/garbage out”. You can’t know what you don’t know. The information on this pandemic comes from politically saturated entities and has caused a great deal of harm to the social fabric of this entire world. It’s only now, that the public has had enough of it all, that CDC et al, are fessing up that the numbers of deaths and hospitalizations have been inflated by counting people who have suffered and some died “with” covid, not because of covid- and, more people that were fully vaccinated are getting sick, than are those who were never vaccinated - (CDC report just today).

OK, we were all blinded to the facts; and, we were all scared, but the stuff that was thrown at people for simply questioning the mandates and shutdowns was a surprise. Perhaps we should stay away from politically charged topics if we can’t stand to hear contrary opinion.

I knew something was not right when a young family member, battling cancer and being treated came down with Omicron and dealt with it just fine.

I too have been shocked at the name calling, the demonizing and the outright viciousness of the comments towards anyone who has a different opinion. There is censorship here as well regarding posts giving the opinions of other experts. These are not allowed here. But, the name calling and insulting comments towards individuals have been allowed. I couldn’t agree more with your comments regarding this whole situation.
