Stop Hating Everything the Pope Likes

“Romanism is now regarded by Protestants with far greater favor than in former years. In those countries where Catholicism is not in the ascendancy, and the papists are taking a conciliatory course in order to gain influence, there is an increasing indifference concerning the doctrines that separate the reformed churches from the papal hierarchy; the opinion is gaining ground that, after all, we do not differ so widely upon vital points as has been supposed, and that a little concession on our part will bring us into a better understanding with Rome. The time was when Protestants placed a high value upon the liberty of conscience which had been so dearly purchased. They taught their children to abhor popery and held that to seek harmony with Rome would be disloyalty to God. But how widely different are the sentiments now expressed! GC 563.1

The defenders of the papacy declare that the church has been maligned, and the Protestant world are inclined to accept the statement. Many urge that it is unjust to judge the church of today by the abominations and absurdities that marked her reign during the centuries of ignorance and darkness. They excuse her horrible cruelty as the result of the barbarism of the times and plead that the influence of modern civilization has changed her sentiments. GC 563.2

Have these persons forgotten the claim of infallibility put forth for eight hundred years by this haughty power? So far from being relinquished, this claim was affirmed in the nineteenth century with greater positiveness than ever before. As Rome asserts that the “church never erred; nor will it, according to the Scriptures, ever err ” (John L. von Mosheim, Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, book 3, century II, part 2, chapter 2, section 9, note 17), how can she renounce the principles which governed her course in past ages? GC 564.1

The papal church will never relinquish her claim to infallibility. All that she has done in her persecution of those who reject her dogmas she holds to be right; and would she not repeat the same acts, should the opportunity be presented? Let the restraints now imposed by secular governments be removed and Rome be reinstated in her former power, and there would speedily be a revival of her tyranny and persecution.”

God sent gave us a prophet to warn us about what will happen before he comes. Sadly His warning is being ignored by many.

Jesus Christ gave us his Revelation of end-time events. I pray that we read the scriptures for ourselves to seek him and his ways. If his word lays out Satan’s plan of deception to take place before Jesus returns and we don’t heed it, we are no different than the Israelites of old that consistently made light of God’s warnings and turned away His prophets and unfortunately reaped the consequences. Do we really want to disregard the words of Jesus? The Pope is the man of sin Paul speaks of in 2 Thess 2, the little horn of the beast power in Daniel 7 as proven through the 1260 day prophecy, the beast of Revelation 13, and 17, and harlot of Revelation 12, etc. If even Satan comes as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14), it is expected that the papacy will deceive many cloaked in Christian garb. Re-read The Great Controversy. The fact EG White was inspired should no longer be in question when one reads what she laid out before us (through the spirit of prophecy which is Jesus Christ) in the headlines of the daily news.

Also, let’s remember that the protestant reformation came about by Catholics that were healed of their spiritual blindness by Jesus Christ and they warned the people of the deceptions of the Pope. They were thanked for their efforts by being killed for the “common good.” And so will it be again. True followers of Christ will be persecuted in a time of trouble such as never was from the beginning. And before you call me an obsessive reactionary…those are the words of Jesus in Matthew 24. He also was called names and was killed for his beliefs. Jesus is doing all he can to save God’s children by giving us warning after warning to turn to him for salvation and away from the great deceiver. We need to choose whether to heed his words or not.

An anti-Catholic paranoia is part of the SDA culture. It is almost like, in order to be a good Adventist, one needs to hate Catholics properly and fully.

This approach is applied even when the issue is a valid point that may actually benefit every creature and plant on Earth. By principle, “If the Pope supports it, I am against it.” This is the attitude all of many Adventists.

I wish the leadership of our church were so committed to the health of our planet as the Catholic leadership is. Adventists bragg to have a great health message but at the same time they are reluctant to support the global health of the planet.

Prejudice is indeed a poisonous agent.

With the Pope being perceived as a political leftist, this has given cover for hard-right American Adventists to preach their politics. When the protestant moral majority figures like Falwell were thought to be the drivers behind the “National Sunday Law” ™, Adventists were conditioned to have no truck with American conservatives, and Adventist conservatives sat silent in envy of guys like Falwell, Robertson and Jeffress for whom GOD and GOP are the same thing.

But now, with Francis as Pope, they’ve dreamed up this nonsense of the “National Sunday Law” coming from environmentalism, and it’s open season for Adventist conservatives to line up like lemmings behind the American evangelicals in their unfailing support for the thrice married adulterer.

Yes…they are getting those bamboo shoots ready now.

It is true that Adventists are true “Numerologists”. We could make a list of “prophetic” numbers.

We were all trained to “label” to “diminish”…not a Christ-like trait.

"You liberals create a “false dilemma” so you can attack the SDA message of world events."

When you use the term, “You liberals”…are you referring to those who don’t agree with you. Just wanting to clarify your statement, Bill.

Hi Pierre,
If you really want to know why so many hate Trump just listen to his recent UN speech.
He threatens what the globalist/global village has been building for 40+ yrs. That benefits some at the expense of others.
That is why he is loved as a secular leader by myself and many others.
The antagonist in reality could care less about "3× adulterer.

“As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them.” GC 608.2

It is amazing how this article directly fulfills quotes like these!

Except regarding EGW’s prophecies that were actually fulfilled… None so far…

That is one of your “faults”, George…bringing pragmatics into the discussion.

BTW…now we are being “treated” to a slew of new commenters with EGW quotes. Nothing like an article about the Pope to bring out the ever-present Catholic Paranoia. I wonder if this should be included in a new edition of the DSM…a thought.

I have no problem with people liking or hating Mr Trump (though I do question the obsession many have about criticizing or defending a man who will likely be of no greater consequence than Grover Cleveland or other middling Presidents). Just don’t think that you’re doing the Lord’s Work by supporting (or criticizing) him.

But as has happened in other countries, church today in the United States is mostly about partisan politics. Take almost any issue ecclesiastical, theological or eschatological issue in the American SdA church and with few exceptions, Democratic voters will line up on one side of the issue and Republican voters will line up on the other side.

Kim, liberal generally means the idea of grace does away with law of justice and discipline. This is manifest in both civil and spiritual matters.
It is assumed that if we would all just be nice, there would be no need for law and punishment to motivate people to do what is right.

The hyper conservative assume if everyone would obey the law, both civil and spiritual, we would need no grace as grace is only for willful rebellion.

Both views are wrong. Law and grace are eternal principles of the kingdom of God. And the motivation to obey is based on both concepts continually.

Grace gives us assurance, the law warns against presumption and a false assurance. “Obey and live” has never been set aside by some bogus application of grace.

But neither is grace done away by some bogus application of law. So unless you have both, you have neither.

Notice how the liberals in politics warp reality to sell their agenda.

“Trump wants to build a wall, this means he is a raciest.”
It is a “false dilemma.” Building a wall, does not automatically equate to racism.
Trump may be a raciest, I don’t know. But building a wall does not prove the point.
Accepting the moral imperative to obey the law of God does not automatically equate to legalism.
Nor does denying the law as the means of meriting heaven equate to antinomianism. True believers do not “keep the law” to merit heaven. We do “keep the family law” because we are children of God by way of marriage to Christ who merited heaven for us.

The difference in motive is radical. Rome’s motivation is bogus.
The Protestant motivation is biblical. So all Protestant confessions of faith affirm “All believers are under the law as the rule of life.”
It is imperative we get this straight or bungle on eternally in mass confusion about the kingdom of God.
The Investigative judgment is not to see who has merited heaven by obedience, but who has returned to loyalty to God and endeavors to keep the family law.
Our eternal life is dependent on how we view this issue.

There is also the element of we vote for the one we personally feel is best for our country. No president has ever been my God and Trump rightly addressed religious liberty at the UN. Most countries dont allow what the 1st amendment t does here.

Thank-you for your explanation, Bill.

I am of the opinion that neither Protestant nor Catholic persuasions “have it right” …and I don’t believe that theology will ever “save” anyone. Just my take.

Considering your definition of liberal, there are no liberals on Spectrum. Not a single one Bill. None.

That’s an interesting comment, Kim.
Did you say how we respond to the word of God has no bearing on our salvation?
So it doesn’t matter whether you believe in the Jesus of the bible, or not. We will all go to heaven?

You know, Kim, “theology” is what you believe about God…

That’s right, George. And no conservatives at F7, right?

So you all believe in the Investigative judgment just like EGW explains???
